Reading comprehension - Reading comprehension can be defined as the level of understanding of a passage or text. For normal reading rates (around 200-220 words per minute) an acceptable level of comprehension is above 75%.

Reading comprehension for special needs - Reading is the process of retrieving and comprehending some form of stored information or ideas. These ideas are usually some sort of representation of language, as symbols to be examined by sight, or by touch (for example Braille).

Skimming (reading) - Skimming is a high speed reading process and involves visually searching the sentences of a page for clues to meaning. It is conducted at a higher rate (around 700wpm plus) than normal reading for comprehension (around 200-230wpm) (sometimes known as rauding), and results in severely lower comprehension rates, especially with information rich reading material.

Recreational reading - Recreational reading, synonymous with free voluntary reading, and related to the Comprehension Hypothesis, is a well supported hypothesis that student gains in reading can be encouraged by giving them time to read what they want without too many evaluative measures. Sustained silent reading is a method of implementing recreational and free voluntary reading theory.
